Visual scattering is not always an undesirable phenomenon, but can play an important role in the light management of solar cells, illuminants and displays. The etching of glass creates scattering centers, but the use of hydrofluoric acid required for this is disadvantageous for environmental and safety reasons. Alternatively, sol-gel layers with structural features that scatter light can be used. Here, the extent of the scattering and its angle dependence can be specifically adjusted.
